STUDENT ENGLISH WRITING SKILLS: writing guidelines for English students

"I am returning this otherwise good writing paper to you because someone has printed gibberish all over it and put your name on top." ~Anonymous English Professor - Ohio University

Whether you are writing a mini-report, an essay or a research report, you are writing to communicate. You write so that the reader could understand and take action accordingly or solve a problem. Most students, however, create barriers between the message and the reader when they write. They write in a manner that the reader does not understand. We should all aim to write just the way we speak and for the type of reader we are writing for.

Eliminate any possible misunderstandinsg and misinterpretations by being as clear and concise as possible. Your words and pictures transmit a message to your readers, who should receive it in the context that was intended. Let your ideas, findings and opinions be properly documented and delivered.
