OFFICE ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR CUBICLE WORKERS

OFFICE ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR CUBICLE WORKERS

Most workplaces have dumped the big private offices for open-plan cubicles. This, according to experts, encourages team work and a friendly organisational culture. Red tape and

communication barriers are reduced because people interact freely, openly and easier in an open plan environment.

OPEN PLAN RULES

OPEN PLAN ETIQUETTE: SOME CUBICLE RULES

There are certain unwritten rules to follow if you are to live and work harmoniously with colleagues in a cubicle environment.

1. Reduce strong smells – your perfume might be smelling nice to you but may be making it very difficult for you r colleagues to work. Refrain from cheap scents and never spray anything in the office. Also avoid applying your nail polish in the office.

2. Never interfere or interrupt conversations, deep thoughts, phone calls, work, or lunches.

3. "E-mail etiquette" is very important – refrain from forwarding every useless email to all your colleagues. Think carefully about the value you are adding before hitting the forward button. If you are forwarding an e-mail because something might happen to you if you don’t, then find a way to deal with your fears and ignorance. Check the authenticity of some fear-inducing e-mails before you forward to people – some e-mails have been circulating for years but are still being passed around as urgent. Scrutinize.

4. Most people love music, but everyone prefers their own type of music. What makes people think everyone has to hear their music really is beyond me! In an open-plan office, the rule is to put on head phones if you are going to be playing music – let it be for your ears only. Even softly played music or radio can be heard in an open plan environment – never assume people are not hearing it.

5. When you talk, do keep your voice down and be mindful of other people hard at work around you.

6. We all love our family, but too many family pictures (and credentials) can look unprofessional.
